Dennis was born in Upstate New York to a large Irish family. He studied English at St. Bonaventure University before moving to Washington, D.C. to begin his career.
He resides in Portland, Maine where he has lived the last 30 years. He has two grown children.
Dennis first took his two children to Monhegan Island, off the coast of Maine, in 1994. There they discovered enchanting little houses made from materials collected off the forest floor. He took the idea home and started recreating the houses out of driftwood, lobster traps, sea glass and other recycled materials.
Since the initial Gnome Home was sold, they have been featured in Maine PBS's "Made in Maine" and the Blaine House.
